BTU Calculation Formula:
From: | To: |
Definition: This calculator estimates the BTU (British Thermal Unit) capacity needed for a mini-split heating/cooling system based on room area and other factors.
Purpose: It helps homeowners and HVAC professionals properly size mini-split systems for optimal efficiency and comfort.
The calculator uses the formula:
Where:
Explanation: The base calculation is multiplied by a factor to account for ceiling height, insulation, sunlight exposure, and other variables.
Details: Correct BTU sizing ensures energy efficiency, proper temperature control, and prevents short-cycling of the HVAC system.
Tips: Enter the room area in square feet, BTU per square foot (default 20), and adjustment factor (default 1.0). All values must be > 0.
Q1: What's the standard BTU/ft² value?
A: For moderate climates, 20 BTU/h per square foot is typical, but this can range from 15-30 based on climate.
Q2: When should I adjust the factor?
A: Increase factor (1.1-1.5) for rooms with high ceilings, poor insulation, or lots of windows. Decrease (0.8-0.9) for well-insulated spaces.
Q3: How does ceiling height affect BTU needs?
A: For ceilings over 8 feet, multiply the factor by (ceiling height ÷ 8).
Q4: What about rooms with lots of windows?
A: Add 10% to the factor for each significant window or glass door.
Q5: How do I convert BTU to tons?
A: 12,000 BTU = 1 ton of cooling capacity. Our result is already in BTU/h.
